What’s the Suzuki Track

Most kids (and parents) shy away from music exams thinking that it is hard and one big nerve-wracking event. But with natural, child-centred approach of the Suzuki method, many parents are so surprised that piano exams can actually be an event that their child can look forward to.

It’s a Child-Centred Approach!

Students in this track develop superb musicianship and superior skills in piano, even at a young age. The process is fun, very natural and child-centered wherein the length of the lesson, it’s pattern, pace and material are all tailor-made and appropriate for the child.

I meet with you and your child weekly for 30-, 45-, or 60 minutes (depending on the level and age of your child). Weekly goals are set, and parents are never at a loss with regards to what should be done at home.

To balance their music education, supplementary materials and activities are also sprinkled throughout the year. These include:

  • learning how to play hymns in worship settings
  • learning how to read lead sheets
  • fun music theory and history classes
  • intro to arranging, improvisation and composition
  • group lessons
  • masterclasses
  • music camps
  • year-end recitals.

In this track, my students

  • Learn how to play by ear from Day 1 so that they can pick up the tune of ANY song they want to learn
  • Retain all the songs they learn and are able to give a performance of their book from cover to cover with accuracy, even from a young age
  • Learn to have a solid playing technique just from the first month of having lessons with me
  • Always have opportunities to sharpen their listening skills so that they can easily pick up tunes and chords. This allows them to get a bigger picture of the music from the beginning, and as a result pieces are learned much faster than the regular rate. They can easily tell whether a sound is full, round, flat or harsh, and can recognize uneven and irregular tempos in music on the fly
  • Have razor-sharp concentration –- not fidgety or restless despite of their  young age. They have the ability to settle and relax before, during and after playing, and can play their pieces in a focused manner
  • Have accurate reading skills that surpass that of peers in the same level from another method
  • Understand the concepts of phrasing, articulation and dynamics and can execute them well, even at a very young age
  • Learn to have practice goals and routines early on, and this enables them to work on their pieces successfully and independently
  • Are exposed to serious classical repertoire (Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Schumann, Haydn, Bartok, etc.) as well as familiar hymns and sacred songs they love to sing at home and church

A Celebration of Success

When the child is ready, he/she plays selected representative pieces at the end of every book. The performance is recorded on video and will be submitted to the piano department of the Asia Region Suzuki Association (ARSA). After successfully passing the exam, the child receives a certificate of accomplishment and may give a graduation recital showcasing the pieces learned in their current level.

Here’s an example of what your child can accomplish with me:

Zach just passed his exam with flying colours! After working with me online for 8 months, he finished Level 1 and was excited to take his first piano exam. All remarks were highly satisfactory! Thanks to ARSA and parents who helped out Zach. Enjoy listening and watching as Zach plays all 19 pieces from Suzuki Book 1.
