Do Online Piano Lessons Work?

What? No teacher physically beside my child? Will they learn quickly? Will they absorb the concepts you are teaching? How is it set-up? Is it safe? These are just some of the few questions parents would ask me.

There’s so much doubt whether online piano lessons work and I wouldn’t blame parents for having hesitations. After all, in-the-flesh, on-location piano lessons are still one of the best ways to do it.

But it doesn’t mean online lessons can’t be on equal footing. Here’s what several parents and students experienced so far in my online piano studio.

Is it effective?

A parent wrote to me after two months of online lessons:

Dear Irene, I’d like to be honest with you. The first time I enrolled my son with you, I thought this was going to be one of those experiences we’d try for fun but wouldn’t work out in the long run. I had doubts whether it would work so I didn’t pull him out of the local piano studio we work with for several years now. Two months in and I see my child more engaged with you, enjoying his pieces and practicing more of what you give him than the other teacher. I’d like to let you know I have so much confidence in you now that I’m pulling him out from the other piano teacher!

Another parent wrote:

I have been teaching my daughter since she was 6 (so she is exhausted of me). I have never seen her as motivated as she is now. Taking online piano lessons with you has been a blessing for her. Piano lessons online is very practical. I do not have to bring her to any place. All the lessons are very clear. I would recommend your online lessons to anyone 100%!

Join my online piano program where I work with your child one-on-one and in real time. I will guide your child every step of the way in learning how to play the piano confidently without the stress of having to commute to another location.

In my studio,

  • My students learn to have a solid playing technique – steady wrist, forearm flat, fingers not caving in, knows several techniques such as legato-playing, staccato, staccatissimo, and portato — just from the first month of having lessons with me
  • My students are exposed to serious classical repertoire (Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Schumann, Haydn, Bartok, etc.) as well as familiar hymns and sacred songs they love to sing at home and church
  • My students successfully pass their ARSA examinations with high marks

Is it hard to set-up? How convenient is convenient?

About the matter of convenience, a young mother of three kids wrote to me:

Your online lessons is such a lifesaver! Normally, I would pick up my two girls at school from work, rush to the house to get my newborn baby before my husband goes off to work, go back on the road and drive to their piano teacher’s house, then deal with traffic on the way back. By the time we all get home, I am super exhausted, and sometimes a bit short-tempered with all the stress of having to travel around. Now, I save so much time and get to do the what I love to do on Tuesdays — relax with my baby at home while drinking a cup of my favourite tea and listening to the girls have lessons with you.

Another mother of four children probably said it best:

Your lessons saves me gas, saves me time, saves me money and saves me from insanity!!! Thanks so much!

Gone are the days where the only way people can have music lessons is to rely on a music teacher who is physically beside your child!

With the advance technology of video calls and virtual conference rooms, more and more students are turning to highly qualified online teachers for the sheer unavailability of good teachers in their local area.

All you’ll need are the following — and who doesn’t have these?!?

  • Your piano
  • A laptop, tablet, or even a phone that can take videos
  • And a good internet connection

The parents in my studio are never at a loss with the progress of their child. Lessons and event schedules, as wells as progress reports are given quarterly, newsletters are emailed monthly, and an online portal is accessible 24/7 where parents can login and monitor their child’s practice times, assignments, repertoire, as well as their invoices and receipts.

Will my kids learn anything? Will they be able to play well? Will they like it?

One mother inquired for lessons and when I asked why she’s transferring her children to me, she said,

“My kids are friends with one of your online students. We’ve seen how quickly he progressed over the few months since he started lessons with you. He can play so many pieces while my child has been working on the same three pieces for over a year now. My eldest has been practically begging me to transfer to you!”

Another mother eagerly texted me on Facebook,

“My son can’t get enough of the group lessons you had the other day. He had so much fun playing his pieces for the other kids who are watching from different parts of the world!”

On a different note, another parent said:

You are strict, firm, consistent and very passionate in what you do. And that has really worked well for me and my son! He has learned to become disciplined yet motivated as a result of the online lessons.

An overjoyed mother called me on the phone,

My kids played at church today! That has been my dream for the longest time! Thanks so much for teaching them songs that they can share with others.

Here’s how it works — I will be meeting with your child once a week, and they will learn many songs that they will be able to play right away from memory. They will be able to easily catch tunes — giving them the freedom to play ANY song they want.

My students read music easily and have a deeper understanding of music because of the fun and exciting monthly masterclasses we have. On top of that, they get to meet piano classmates from different cultures and parts of the world.
